Resources

Research datasets and resources

This repository brings together open research datasets, spatial resources and educational materials developed through research on forest biomass production, forest disturbances, forest operations and sustainability. The resources are intended to facilitate data reuse, comparative research, modelling, teaching and the development of new applications in forest science and the bioeconomy.

Datasets

Wind damage and subsequent forest disturbances in Finland.
This openly available dataset contains stand-level information for more than 70,000 wind-damaged forest stands across Finland, integrating geographic location, topography, forest structure, tree-species composition, climate and indicators of subsequent bark beetle and snow damage. By linking the characteristics of damaged stands with the occurrence and timing of later disturbances, the dataset provides a large empirical basis for statistical analysis, machine-learning applications, disturbance-risk modelling and comparative studies of sequential and interacting forest disturbances. Open dataset: Zenodo dataset. Original article: DOI: 10.1016/j.foreco.2026.124074.

Forest operations and biomass supply video repository.
This educational repository contains 18 videos documenting forest operations related to biomass supply and energy production, illustrating forest machinery, harvesting systems, biomass recovery, handling and other operational components of forest-energy supply chains. Developed within the Forest Energy Portal initiative, the collection connects research, education and operational practice and can support teaching, professional training and comparative analysis of forest biomass procurement systems. Spatial database of biomass production systems in Europe.
This open resource provides a harmonised spatial characterisation of 426,783 biomass-production fields and forest stands across 17 European countries, representing approximately 2.14 million hectares. It covers seven major biomass production systems: eucalypt, radiata pine, black locust, poplar and hybrid aspen, willow, miscanthus and reed canary grass. The database documents their spatial distribution, field or stand size and surrounding land-use context, providing an empirical basis for research on biomass deployment, landscape structure, land-use diversification and the relationships between biomass production and multifunctional landscapes. Open dataset: Zenodo dataset. Original article: DOI: 10.1111/gcbb.70057.

Willow yield data and maps for Northern Europe.
This resource provides one of the largest empirical collections of commercial short-rotation willow plantation yields in Northern Europe, comprising harvesting records from 1,790 plantations covering 7,753 hectares in central and southern Sweden, established between 1986 and 2005. The records contain georeferenced first-rotation biomass yields and were linked with temperature and precipitation variables to analyse climatic controls on productivity. Spatial yield models were subsequently developed for low-, medium- and high-performance plantations and extrapolated at 1 × 1 km resolution across agricultural areas of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, northern Germany and northern Poland, providing a valuable empirical basis for biomass-resource assessment, willow yield modelling, energy-crop research and analyses of climatic suitability. International expert assessment of biomass sustainability criteria.
This dataset contains assessments from 122 international experts representing 23 countries on the relative importance of sustainability criteria for biomass supply chains used for energy. Collected through a structured questionnaire, the data include pairwise comparisons of 12 sustainability sub-criteria organised into economic, social and environmental dimensions. The resource provides a basis for Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), multi-criteria decision analysis, preference analysis and consensus assessment, as well as further research examining how professional, geographical and stakeholder perspectives influence priorities in biomass sustainability assessment.
